Major points to consider:

1. Don't steal e-mail addresses. Your true fans will opt-in (give you their email addresses willingly) to your email list.
2. Collect fan data on your website, when you perform at shows, etc.
3.Fans must be earned-- give them something in return for opting into your email blast list.
4. First impressions can't be erased.
