Here are simple definitions of the terms “level,” “gain,” and “volume” as they relate to audio engineering 👇

Level: Refers to the strength or amplitude of an audio signal at any point in the signal chain, typically measured in decibels (dB). It’s the actual amount of sound energy being processed or heard.

Gain: Refers to the adjustment of the signal level at the input stage of a device or plugin. It’s used to boost or attenuate the signal as it enters the system, affecting how much signal is processed downstream.

Volume: Refers to the adjustment of the signal level at the output stage, determining how loud the sound is when it reaches the listener. It’s typically what you control with a volume knob or fader.

Each term addresses a specific point in the signal chain, and understanding these distinctions helps in better communication and decision-making during mixing and mastering.
