During our trip to LA we linked up with Bainz at the YSL studios. If you dont know Bainz, he’s the engineer behind Young Thug & all of YSL. He’s mixed albums like Slime Language, So Much Fun + new more recently, Young Thug’s new album, Punk. Bainz was born in India but moved to America to pursue music full time. He eventually started his own studio and had artists like Travis Scott & Future come through to record. He then landed a crazy role as Young Thug’s engineer, and also for the rest of YSL records (Gunna, Lil Keed, Lil Duke, Yak Gotti, Yung Kayo). We talked about how he managed to get such big artists to come to his studio, and how exactly he landed the full time role with Thug. Bainz said he had worked so long for Thug before anything even released, but he kept working and was having so much fun with it. He tells stories of the time he made Hot ft Gunna, which ended up on Billboard. Also the time Future and Young Thug recorded “Sup Mate” in literally one take in 10 minutes, which ended up being on So Much Fun. Bainz also talks about the hardest song he had to make which was Solid. This was because the Drake verse wasn’t originally going to be on the album since he sent it in so late, but Young thug, the day of the album release, got Bainz to mix it as fast as possible so It could end up on the album. We also talked to him about being south asian and having brown parents being okay with his decision to do music full time, and how Young Thug feels about him making the sacrifice to be away from his family so much. There’s a ton of gems in this for engineers so peep the full video for them! Kids Take Over is based in Vancouver, Canada.
