Interview with S1 (Symbolyc One) the 3x grammy award winning music producer from Dallas, TX. S1 has become a master at getting placements, including “Kanye West – Power”, as well as records with Drake, Jay-Z, Madonna, Eminem & more.

S1 pulled up to our studio in ATL to drop some exclusive gems on the producer community. Of course we started with his come up story and his life changing moment when he found out Kanye West flew him out to Hawaii and wanted to use his beat for a song that we now know as “Power.” He later signed to Kanye West’s production team and started making beats for Very G.O.O.D. Beats & getting placements with superstars like Jay-Z & Beyonce.

One of our favorite topics was when S1 talked about how he came up with a plan to quit his job to be a producer full time and actually executed it and made it work. He talked about the importance of having a daily schedule and how much time a producer should be spending on their dream.

We also tapped into the spiritual side of S1 and how important maintaining his relationship with God has been to his journey. He warns that many people tend to only talk to god when things are bad and leave him out of the picture when things are going good, a concept that seems like common sense but takes real effort.

S1 Inspiration Scripture: “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me”. -Phil. 4:13 Symbolyc One (S1), born in 1976 as Larry D. Griffin Jr., was born and raised in Waco, TX. As a child, S1 grew up infatuated with old tunes that played on his parents’ turntable. This led him to learning alto sax and piano through out his teen years. As a devoted Christian, S1 began playing piano for Sunday school at his local church which developed his insight on music even more. After forming a hip hop group with his cousin, Myth, back in 1996, S1 would eventually venture into the Art of Production and making beats. In 1999, he received his Associates Degree in Applied Science: Audio Engineering which required him to take his music theory and ear training to another level. Through a decade of hard work, sacrifice, rewards and disappointments, he continued to work harder and put ALL his trust in God to guide his life and career. In 2007, S1 began competing in National Beat Competitions (I-Standard, Red Bull Big Tune & Sha Money’s One Stop Shop) across the U.S. In those competitions, he would go on to win 1st, 2nd, or either 3rd place along with acquiring many new fans and meeting people including Major label executives and Industry big wigs. Participating in these competitions and conferences allowed S1 to build numerous key relationships in the Industry. Today, S1 is the main producer of the highly acclaimed group Strange Fruit Project. His style and production range stretches beyond all genres from R&B to Soul, from Underground to Urban Pop and everything else in between. As an upcoming super producer, S1 has gone on to work with great artist such as Erykah Badu, Stat Quo, Rhymefest, Rah Digga, Ghostface, Little Brother, amongst others as well as being a core member in Erykah Badu’s electronic band, The Cannabinoids. Ultimately, he’s gone on to co-produce(along with Kanye/Mike Dean) the Hit single “Power” for Grammy Award Winning Artist/Producer Kanye West. The Journey now begins. http://symbolycone.com/ http://www.myspace.com/symbolycone http://vimeo.com/symbolyc http://www.youtube.com/symbolycone https://twitter.com/symbolycone
