Day in the Life of Chophouze: The Reality of Being a Music Producer

Jonathan “Extra Jay” Joyner and Jahmon “Smiley” Pauling are first cousins, Jay’s Father and Smiley’s Mother are siblings. Together they form Chophouze Productions LLC. Jonathan "Extra Jay" Joyner was born in Winston-Salem, NC on March 5th 1987. Two years later, his family moved to Macon, GA due to his father’s job. Jahmon Pauling was born and raised in Winston-salem,NC; his birthdate is Febuary 18th, 1987. In high school Jay produced music and engaged in rapping while in Macon, GA. On the other hand, Smiley produced music and performed in a reggae band with his father called “Lion Tracks” in Winston-Salem, NC and other cities throughout the U.S. Upon high-school graduation in 2005, Jay moved back to North Carolina where he and Smiley instantly linked up and created the production team called "Chophouze". They started producing with fruity loops, pro tools digi 001, mpc 500 an triton keyboards. Because Smiley is also an Artist who goes by “Smileyface” while performing, a lot of their early production was used to complete his first mixtape “Smilez Alot”. Their first placement was presented by French Montana on the DVD series entitled “Cocaine City” in 2006. Thereafter, they have produced several successful tracks including “What If” by Jada Kiss ft. Nas on his album “The Last Kiss” with over 300,000 albums sold; “Kesha” by 2 Chainz on “T.R.U. REALigion” the mixtape with over 4.1 million views; and “Envy” by Nicki Minaj on the mixtape “Beam me up Scotty” with over 4.5 million views. In addition, they’ve worked with notable Artists such as Anthony Hamilton, Busta Rhymes, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, Travis Porter, Cap 1, YG, Young Dolph, Young Scooter, Young Thug, Chief Keef, BJ the Chicago Kid and many more. With years of hard work and determination, they’ve managed to build a reputable brand in North Carolina which is a hard market. In 2013, they signed with Street Execs which is one of the most successful music management teams in Atlanta, GA.
